Audition Requirements

Students are expected to prepare a solo for the audition. The limited audition time might only allow for up to 60 seconds of the song. Piano, accompanist, CD player, line-in cable, and USB port are available if needed

Note: Each student should prepare a song written specifically for solo voice. Students auditioning for Chamber Choir, Women's Chorus, or Men’s Chorus should prepare an art song, aria, solo hymn or spiritual arrangement, or a suitable substitute. Students auditioning for the Gospel Choir should prepare a gospel song. While other sources are perfectly acceptable and encouraged, students may choose from this list of possible song suggestions.

Except for Gospel Choir auditions, students will sight read an 8-measure melody.

During the solo, there should be observable evidence of expression from the singer, both physically and vocally. The expression should be appropriate for the style of music being sung. Auditions for the Gospel Choir might also include movement (namely, clapping and swaying in rhythm while singing).

Auditions for Chamber Choir might also require students to sing scales (major, minor, chromatic, and/or whole tone)

*Note:  Students should be prepared to sing any of the scales indicated above while the same scale is being played simultaneously on the piano, but in a different key.  For more information on scales, visit Students are also encouraged to view Two Minute Music Theory videos on YouTube for help with understanding music notation.

Course Enrollment

Students should enroll in the choral ensemble course(s) for which they plan to audition PRIOR to the audition.  During the Camp War Eagle academic advisement sessions, incoming students should submit the information of their preferred choral course(s) (listed below) to their advisors when making a course schedule. Be sure to let the advisor know that you have permission to enroll in the course prior to the audition.

While prior course enrollment does not guarantee participation in any given choral ensemble, it ensures that the student’s class schedule avails him/her for participation in a preferred choral group.  Early enrollment in choral courses also helps to facilitate important announcements to potential members of each individual ensemble, and it provides the instructor an estimate of the anticipated class size and personnel when preparing course materials. Course numbers and other class information are listed below. Students will receive one hour of academic credit per group, per semester. In most cases, students will be notified of the status of their audition at the conclusion of their individual audition, or through e-mail by the first day of classes.
