New mentoring program recruiting CLA faculty

As the first College of Liberal Arts’ Diversity Fellow, Dr. Elizabeth Benson is launching a mentoring program titled AUgmented Mentoring: For Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. This program aims to instill a sense of belonging for both senior and junior faculty through traditional 1-to-1 mentoring with a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion. The program is currently recruiting faculty mentors and mentees within the College of Liberal Arts.

Instead of using traditional discipline-specific criteria for mentoring, AUgmented Mentoring will pair participants based on voluntarily disclosed personal identity traits. This process will facilitate specialized mentoring in areas such as race, sexual orientation, religion, family structure, and many more specified areas of identity. Personal information will be voluntarily disclosed, safeguarded, and used by the program only to facilitate the pairing process.

Why be a mentor? Mentoring is a way to meaningfully practice allyship in equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Mentoring a colleague who is part of a marginalized community can assist in combating systemic obstacles in career advancement. If mentors have also faced systemic obstacles, they have invaluable knowledge of how to navigate the ever-changing landscape of cultural norms within higher education.

AUgmented Mentoring: For Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging is a pilot program, which will run from November 1, 2021 to May 13, 2022. Any faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts is invited to join the program by taking a Qualtrics survey designed to thoughtfully pair the mentor and mentee for mutually beneficial mentoring. Mentoring is limited to eight hours per academic year, and all participants will receive a certificate of participation. Registration is open now until November 1.
