Auburn University Theatre and Dance to present first production on Gogue Performing Arts Center stage

Students perform Into the Woods on the Gogue Center stage

Auburn University Theatre and Dance continues its 2021-22 season with their first production on the stage of the Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center at Auburn University, March 4, at 7:30 p.m., March 5, at 7:30 p.m., and March 6, at 2:30 p.m. This fully staged concert version of “Into the Woods” brings together the many talents of students, faculty and staff from both the Theatre and Dance and Music departments. With beautiful costumes, stunning projections and lights, and a full orchestra, this production hopes to mark the first of many collaborations between these arts departments and the Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center.

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Tony Award-winning musical “Into the Woods” weaves together the stories of a motley crew of fairy tale characters including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, and a baker and his wife as they set out “Into the Woods” in search of adventures. Auburn Theatre and Dance returns to the woods after first staging this musical more than 13 years ago and presents this production only months after the passing of Stephan Sondheim in November 2021 at age 91. The show resonates with lyrics and melodies well suited to our times of uncertainty and isolation, reminding us of the importance of community and the possibilities and challenges of growing up. Venture into the woods and across campus to wish, to hope, to laugh, to dream and to remember that “no one is alone.”

The artistic team for “Into the Woods” includes director Chase Bringardner; music direction by James Mablin; costume design by Tracy Oleinick; set, lights and projection design by Fereshteh Rostampour; choreography by Jeri Dickey; stage management by guest artist and former Auburn Theatre and Dance student Katherine McDonald Abell; and sound design by student designer Bailey Fenn. The cast includes Nikki Ahlf, Jake Brockman, Antonisia Collins, Tapley Cronier, Julianna Devaney, Jonathon Dickey, Ashley Digiovanni, Nick DiJulio, Sydney Golden, Mary Keyton, Maddie Maradik, Holden Mathison, Bethany Novotny, Pierce Rossman, Luke Sexton, Ella Taylor, Jenna Viana, Cassie Vitale and Jackson Wells.

The run time for “Into the Woods” is approximately two and a half hours with a 15-minute intermission.

The show will take place at the Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center and contains some intense moments and adult themes.
