Auburn French professor awarded L’Ordre des francophones d’Amérique
Endowed Alumni Professor of French Evelyne Bornier is one of seven recipients of the prestigious L’Ordre des francophones d’Amérique, awarded each year by the Canadian Ministry of the French Language.
Since 1978, the decoration has recognized the merits of people who have devoted themselves or who are dedicated to the preservation and development of the French language in America, or who have given their support to the development of French life on the American continent.
In November, Minister of the French Language Jean-François Roberge presented the award to Bornier at a ceremony in Quebec City, Canada. Bornier also received a calligraphed parchment, signed by the Prime Minister of Quebec and the Minister of the French Language.
“It was a great honor to receive this award in Quebec City, a French-speaking city so steeped in history,” Bornier said. “This prestigious distinction moves me because it recognizes and rewards my efforts for the dissemination of the French language in the Americas. It is with humility and gratitude that I accepted this award, but also with a great sense of duty and responsibility in mind. I believe that, as French educators and scholars, it is our duty to join forces to expand, consolidate and preserve Francophonie in the Americas.”
Bornier teaches undergraduate and graduate French courses in the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University. Her research focuses on French and francophone literature and civilization, comparative literature, film studies, translation and business.
In 2023, Tintamarre published Bornier’s collection of bilingual (French/English) poetry, “Nécessaires détours/Necessary Detours.” The 2023 Montreal Book Festival at the Palais des Congrès featured Bornier as a guest artist to read from the collection and host a book signing.
For more than 30 years, Bornier has worked to preserve the French language in Louisiana, Alabama and the Americas.
