Ms. Kitty's dishes up comfort food
Life-long Camden resident Veronica M. Wilson, also known as Ms. Kitty, built a booming business “cooking from the heart.” She dishes up Southern staples for lunches that draw a crowd to Ms. Kitty’s.
This mother and grandmother greets each customer with a bright smile Monday through Friday and Sunday from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sunday is her busiest day. Food available on a buffet includes fried chicken, baked chicken, pork chops, meatloaf, catfish, mashed potatoes, yams, peas, collard greens, dressing, cornbread and macaroni and cheese.
She said the most popular dishes are the fried pork chop or baked chicken. Customers also appreciate her desserts, which include homemade chocolate cake.
Born on Feb. 26,1971, Wilson said she originally wanted to open a bakery named “Kitty’s Kakes, Koffee, and Kafe,” all with Ks. However, her uncle suggested she do lunches, and the rest is history.
Over the years, she operated in different locations before moving to her current spot near the intersection of Highway 41 and 28 in 2012. That’s where multiple groups of people like “The Golden Girls,” the bank crew, and regulars from local businesses gather for lunch and to socialize.
The crowds keep coming, Ms. Kitty said, because “we believe in feeding.” She and her staff are never shy about portions.
Her future plans include writing a cookbook to share some of the recipes that make her place so popular and continuing to love and support her customers. She said, “If it wasn’t for my customers, I would have been gone a long time ago.”
