Mrs. Nell Gilmer, 82, is a long time resident of Elba. Born and raised on a farm outside the city limits, Gilmer was the valedictorian of her Elba High School class of 1952. Gilmer met and married her husband, Jim, while in college at Troy University. They traveled around the nation with his job in the apparel industry.

On Monday, June 5, the Collinsville Lions Club invited me to sit in on their meeting at the Collinsville Public Library. Having never been to a Lions Club meeting, I knew very little about them other than the fact that they collected glasses for refurbishing purposes.

- A New Vision for Amelia Love Johnson High School

Amelia Love Johnson High School, also known as ALJ High School, is the only school in Thomaston. The kindergarten through 12th grade school is one of three schools in the Marengo County School system. There are approximately 1,000 students in the Marengo County school system with about 180 students attending the Thomaston school.

In 2019, Alabama will turn 200 years old. It’s an event to be celebrated and an opportunity to spark a conversation about the history and culture of our state. Between the years of 2017 and 2019, the Alabama 200 organization aims to support, create and execute events and activities that commemorate the stories of the people, place, and path to statehood.

- Rockin' the River Festival 2017

The 3rd annual Rockin’ the River Festival took place this past weekend in downtown Elba. The event is always held on the closest Saturday to the 154th day of the year, which is also length of the Pea River in miles that runs through the heart of downtown. The community came out and enjoyed vendors, good food, live music and the classic Rubber Duck Race.
