At the age of 83, Betty Jean Tucker of Linden is doing anything but slowing down. Recently, Dr. Tucker published her book, “On a Darkling Plain: Stories of the Great Depression”, from Livingston Press. The book is a collection of short stories. The first story, “Callie”, was published in 1951 when the then Betty Jean Foxhall was only 19.

Eighteen Selma and Dallas County youth gathered on Friday, May 30, for a “Strengthening Selma’s Future” forum. These students hailed from several different area high schools, and many are involved with the Selma Youth Ambassador program.

Dallas County Extension coordinator Callie Nelson has been working for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) for more than 20 years. In that time, she has had her hand in agricultural projects, 4-H development, youth forums and development, leadership training, disaster relief, natural resource management, health education and so much more.

Alabama’s first state capital, Cahawba, was founded along the fertile banks of the Alabama and Cahaba Rivers in 1819. At the time, this wilderness city was home to some of America’s bravest men and women, people determined to prosper and build up a new state.
