- Restored Theatre a Source of Unity, Pride in Roanoke

In my first few weeks in Roanoke, residents asked me over and over again whether I had seen their newly restored theatre downtown. I was impressed by the pride that many citizens seemed to have in the theatre and excited to see the building that so many seemed to view as a symbol of the town’s future.

- Living Democracy Citizenship Award: Juanita 'Lady' Wright

The idea for New Life Worship Center’s Summer Educational Empowerment Program began last summer as Juanita ‘Lady’ Wright was dropping off USDA-provided lunches to Roanoke children during her lunch break. Wright, a member of New Life and recently retired social worker, enjoyed spending her break dropping off lunches to schoolchildren who weren’t able to make it to one of the designated drop sites.

- Roanoke Rotary Club a Model of 'Service Above Self"

One of the longest-standing formal organizations in Roanoke committed to public service is the Rotary Club. Part of a larger national organization, Rotary Club 4052 will celebrate its 78th anniversary in Roanoke on Tuesday, June 30th. Since its inception in 1937, the Roanoke chapter has been an exemplar of Rotary International’s official mottos—‘Service Above Self’ and ‘One Profits Most Who Serves Best.’

- Lighthouse Soup Kitchen Provides Beacon of Hope in Randolph County

Just as traditional lighthouses guided ships into port, the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen in Roanoke seeks to be a beacon of hope by providing a hot meal every Thursday night. The Lighthouse is supported by 16 teams from churches in Randolph County.

Established in 1845, First Baptist Church has enjoyed a long history in Roanoke, Alabama. Construction of the original building on Main Street began in 1901, and its current building has occupied its location in the heart of downtown Roanoke since 1979.
