On a warm and rainy Saturday, runners flocked to downtown Collinsville to run the newly renamed Hallin’ Up the Gap 5K Challenge, hosted by the Collinsville Public Library as one of their biggest fundraisers for the year.

The Museum of Collinsville History documents and celebrates the rich history of this community in northeast Alabama. Historic objects donated by countless citizens, ranging from military artifacts to agricultural tools, can be seen by visitors who stop by the museum housed in a former bank on Main Street.

John Dersham remembers clearly the very day he discovered his love for photography. That day was Nov. 1, 1960, his ninth birthday. That was the day his father gifted Dersham with a Browning camera that he had received in 1930. It was then that Dersham’s love for photography blossomed.

When I was first informed that my summer as part of Living Democracy would be in Collinsville, Alabama, I was excited and nervous. My time in Collinsville this summer has been one of new experiences, learning hard lessons, and growing as a member of civic society. I have learned what it means to contribute as a member of a community.

On one particularly slow day at the library, my friend and library employee Alexus started talking about what there is to do for fun around the area. She explained that there are many local spots that not everyone knows about. This sparked an idea for a weekend trip to visit all of these “locals only” spots.
