In rural areas, it is common to find a place where people gather informally to discuss things that are going on both in the community and the world at large. For the residents of Chatom, Alabama, that place is Jake’s Family Restaurant.

When talking with Inda Lou Schell in Chatom, Alabama, three things become evident: one, community is an essential part of life; two, the sky’s the limit; three, “people [truly] make the difference.” Schell is a Chatom native who was born in “a farmhouse three miles out of town.”
