About Me

Carrie Spell has published short stories, interviews, and articles in more than 30 journals and magazines, including McSweeney's, Mississippi Review, Black Warrior Review, New World Writing, The Rumpus, Georgetown Review, and Encyclopedia of Alabama. Her fiction has been awarded a Henfield Prize and nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize. She received an MA and PhD in creative writing from The Center for Writers at University of Southern Mississippi and a BA in English from Cornell University. 

Spell’s experience as a literary journal editor includes her current work as an associate editor of Southern Humanities Review and past positions at Mississippi Review, New World Writing, Opium Magazine, and Pindeldyboz

In 2020, Spell received the Professional Excellence in Teaching and Learning (PETL) Outstanding Lecturer Award from Auburn’s College of Liberal Arts. The Department of English also recognized her teaching with the 2017 Lecturer Teaching Award and 2010 Instructor Teaching Award.

Spell serves as advisor to the English Club.

Research Interests

world literature, creative writing
