About Me
Maria Kuznetsova was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and moved to the United States as a child. She is the author of the coming-of-age immigrant novel Oksana, Behave! (Random House, 2019), which was a Barnes & Noble Discover Pick and a best spring read of Oprah Magazine, Pop Sugar, InStyle, and the Wall Street Journal. Her second novel, Something Unbelievable (Random House, 2021), a historical and humorous meditation on generational divides, legacy, and loss, was praised in the New York Times. Her third book, Enter Sandwoman, a collection of stories from the multiverse about a perpetually dissatisfied mother and artist whose mad scientist father tries to solve her existential and physical ailments with tragicomic results, will be published by Sarabande Books in 2028. Her short stories and essays have been published in dozens of literary journals including Slate Magazine, One Story, Guernica, The Southern Review, The Threepenny Review, The Yale Review, The Rumpus, The Georgia Review, and The Missouri Review. Her short fiction also appears in the 2026 Pushcart Prize Anthology, and she is a recipient of a 2027 Alabama Council on the Arts Grant.
She received a BA in English from Duke University, an MA in English and fiction writing from UC Davis, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She is also the fiction editor of Southern Humanities Review. She lives in Auburn with her husband and their two children.
