About Me
Lauren Woods is an artist whose practice and creative research focus on the visual and conceptual possibilities within narrative figuration. Working primarily in the medium of painting, her current body of work is an ongoing visual development of a contemporary mythology. Influenced by the grand narrative of Western art history, along with various religious iconographic and story-telling traditions, paintings become a theatrical space to examine notions of gender, sentimentality, desire, power, beauty, and death. Poetic situations emerge from mixing revered sources with disoriented signs of masculinity and femininity, emphasizing the equivocal nature of images.
In 2006, Lauren received her BA in studio art from Spring Hill College. She then completed an MFA in painting at the New York Academy of Art, Graduate School of Figurative Art in 2010. She has shown work at the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Mobile Museum of Art, and the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, as well as exhibiting nationally at galleries in New York City, Brooklyn, and New Orleans. Before joining the Department of Art & Art History at Auburn University, she taught drawing and painting at Spring Hill College and the University of South Alabama in Mobile. Beyond visual art, she has an extensive performance background as a classical ballet dancer. With this experience, she creates choreography, scenic and costume design, and has most recently explored video production.
