Undergraduate Program in Journalism
Students choosing to major in Journalism have two options – Journalism (JRNL) or Sports Production (JRSP).
Whatever the choice, all our skills-based courses are limited to 20 students to ensure that our majors receive one-on-one instruction and feedback from their professors. Our School partnerships with organizations such as War Eagle Productions and Gray Television, provide students with extraordinary hands-on learning opportunities.
Journalism (JRNL)
The Journalism Program at Auburn University prepares students to tell stories through digital and traditional platforms. Our students become multi-platform content creators who can produce and edit broadcast and audio stories, web videos, design newspaper and magazine pages and create websites in their work as reporters, anchors, editors, or producers. As a major, you will benefit from our award-winning faculty who bring years of professional experience to the classroom. You have the opportunity to gain hands-on practical experience at the university’s student-run newspaper, television station, radio station, literary magazine or yearbook. Working with your advisor, you may choose an area of emphasis to further specialize your journalism training in areas. Emphasis areas include Sports Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Magazine Journalism, Community Journalism, Investigative Journalism and Visual Journalism. Our graduates have gone on to work in a variety of media outlets, including the New York Times, ESPN, CNN and 247Sports.
Journalism–Sports Production (JRSP)
The Journalism Sports Production track is for students who love collegiate and professional sports and want to be part of the teams who produce live sporting events for television, streaming and mobile. This track provides courses and professional training for those seeking careers as in-venue sports producers, field producers, directors, control room operators, video editors and more. Students will work closely with our faculty who have decades of experience in the sports field. They will also have the opportunity to work with Auburn Athletics’ War Eagle Productions, which produces more than 350 live events each year, ranging from in-venue video boards, such as the jumbotron in Jordan-Hare Stadium, to ESPN, ESPN+ and SEC Network productions.
