About Me

A native of Columbus, Georgia, Sherrie Gilbert is a strong advocate for higher education. One thing instilled in her as an undergraduate student at Spelman College was the necessity of giving back to the community. Gilbert reflects, “There was a speaker at the college whose words always stuck with me. She stated that it would not be enough to earn a college degree and be successful for ourselves, but that we were responsible for employing whatever we learned to make a positive change within our communities.” Gilbert believes that everyone has something to offer, and we should not take our education and experiences hostage. Instead we should use them to inspire others and to make a difference in the world.

It is the interactive exchange of ideas and experiences with students that draws her to the classroom, as there is always something to look forward to. Gilbert currently serves as a senior lecturer in communication in the Auburn University School of Communication and Journalism. She is a proud graduate of both Spelman College (BA, English) and Auburn University (MA, Communication). It is her hope that her students are able to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom so that they may set new heights and standards in their careers and communities.

Some words-of-wisdom by which Gilbert lives are conveyed through the words of renowned civil rights activist and children’s advocate, Marion Wright Edelman: “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.”
