The works in this exhibition include paintings, drawings, and collages on patterned fabrics, wood, engineered wood, and wood-patterned vinyl—surfaces commonly found in interior spaces. These materials reference nature while turning it into ordered and reproducible images and functional objects. They reveal a perhaps shared human need to have images of nature inside our homes and on our bodies, albeit in more controlled ways.
With each work, Marina Kassianidou looks for ways to inhabit these materials that already inhabit our homes and bodies. By painting over parts of the image, reorganizing the image using collage, or by recreating parts of an image/material in another material, Kassianidou burrows into each surface, excavating it and unearthing potentially unseen narratives. Kassianidou's overall practice approaches mark making not as a means of imposing one’s presence, but as a mode of becoming attentive and of responding and relating to something other—a surface, a space, the world around us.

This event is free and open to Auburn University students, faculty and staff. Biggin Hall is handicap accessible.
Supplies will be provided, but attendees who own the following items may wish to bring them so they won't need to share tools: X-Acto knife, cutting board, fine-point scissors and/or fabric scissors. Attendees can also bring fabric or papers they would like to include in their collages.

About the Artist
Marina Kassianidou was born in Limassol, Cyprus, and lives and works between Limassol and Boulder, Colorado. She has a BA in Studio Art from Stanford University, an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and a PhD in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, London, UK. Her work has been exhibited internationally at spaces such as the House of Cyprus (Athens, Greece), NiMAC (Nicosia, Cyprus), Thkio Ppalies (Nicosia, Cyprus), The Center for Drawing UAL (London, UK), Tenderpixel Gallery (London, UK), Stand4 Gallery (Brooklyn, New York), Yes Ma’am Projects (Denver, Colorado), Lane Meyer Projects (Denver, Colorado), and Rule Gallery (Marfa, Texas). She has been awarded fellowships and residencies at the Ragdale Foundation, Hambidge Center, Can Serrat, Ox-Bow, and The Studios at MASS MoCA, among others. She is a recipient of the 2016 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant. She is currently Assistant Professor in Art Practices at the University of Colorado Boulder.
