Amanda Guthrie receives Undergraduate Research Fellowship

Sociology student Amanda Guthrie received a College of Liberal Arts and Auburn University Undergraduate Research Fellowship to support her study on how modern day hobos cope with a stigmatized identity.   Her work will focus on how their community has transformed and adapted to life in the twenty-first century and how those individuals find and fit into that community while remaining a part of the greater society.  Using Irving Goffman’s theory on stigma, her study will analyze the stigma and strategies they use to “pass” in society while carrying out a deviant lifestyle.
