Application Instructions
Doctoral Programs Application Instructions
We strongly recommend that you print these instructions out and follow them carefully. They will help you complete the application process for our doctoral programs in the most timely and efficient manner.
Auburn's Department of Psychology is accepting applications for its Clinical Psychology, Experimental Psychology and Industrial/Organizational Psychology doctoral programs. To apply for admission to a doctoral program you must complete the following three steps (four steps for international applicants). All steps must be completed and all materials received by December 1 (for admission to the Clinical program) or January 15 (for admission to the Experimental and Industrial/Organizational programs) to ensure consideration for admission for the following fall semester :
Step 1) Complete the Graduate School's online application form (follow the link below) and pay the application fee. The application fee is $50 ($60 for international applicants) and can be paid by credit card during the online application session or by check thereafter. Checks should be sent to the graduate school at the address given in step number 2 below, NOT to the psychology department.
Please note that when you complete the online Graduate School application you will be directed to have your recommenders send letters "directly to the head of the department in which you plan to major." Please disregard this instruction and instead follow the directions in "Step 3" below regarding the letters of recommendation.

Step 2) Have your official GRE score report and one official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate credits from each school previously attended (except for credits earned at Auburn University) sent directly to the Graduate School from the issuing institutions so that they are received by the Graduate School no later than December 1 (for admission to the Clinical program) or January 15 (for admission to the Experimental and Industrial/Organizational programs). The ETS Institution Code number to use to have your GRE scores reported to Auburn's Graduate School is 1005; the address to which transcripts should be sent is:
Graduate School
Hargis Hall
Auburn University, AL 36849
Step 3) Complete the Department of Psychology's Application for Doctoral Programs form and put it in the same envelope with all supporting materials (statement of intent, a photocopy of your GRE score report, three letters of recommendation, photocopies of your transcripts [it is okay to provide original official transcripts issued to student in your departmental application package but you must remove them from their original envelopes before you put them in your departmental application package]). Mail this package to the Department of Psychology at the address below so that it is received no later than December 1 (for admission to the Clinical program) or January 15 (for admission to the Experimental and Industrial/Organizational programs).
The psychology department does NOT supply a form for recommendations. Ask each referee to write on letterhead stationery, seal the letter in an envelope, sign over the envelope's seal, and return the letter to you. When you have all three letters in your possession, put them in one package with your departmental application form and other supporting materials ((statement of intent, photocopies of your transcripts, a photocopy of your GRE score report) and send them to the psychology department at the address below. Do NOT send them to the Graduate School. Send the package to:

Step 4) International applicants are also required to take the TOEFL and the TSE and have scores reported to the Graduate School. The ETS Institution Code number to use to have your TOEFL and TSE scores reported to Auburn's Graduate School is 1005. Auburn University requires a score of at least 550 on the TOEFL paper test or 213 on the TOEFL electronic test to be considered for admission, and at least a 50 on the TSE is required to be considered for a teaching assistantship, which is the form of support offered to first year graduate students in the psychology department.
Additional Information
Procedure: After the Graduate School evaluates your credentials they send them to our department. Our admissions committees begin meeting in December. Finalists may be interviewed on campus or by telephone. Offers of admission and alternate status will be made by March 31 and offers of admission must be accepted by April 15 so that the status of alternates may be resolved shortly thereafter.
Financial Aid: All applicants are automatically considered for all available assistantships and fellowships. For Federal Financial Aid information (e.g., student loans), contact Auburn's Financial Aid office at 334-844-4367.
Catalog: The Auburn University Bulletin may be obtained from the Admissions Office (334-844-4080) or you may access the Bulletin and other Graduate School documents via their web page.
Previous Graduate Work: Students seeking exemption from a departmental requirement based on completion of similar graduate work elsewhere discuss this with departmental faculty after enrolling. Where appropriate, the faculty will determine whether earlier graduate work, including theses, may be substituted for Auburn departmental requirements.
