Department of Philosophy
What can I do with a philosophy degree?

The study of philosophy offers great practical rewards. It cultivates skills in persuasive writing, clear thinking and logical criticism, increases the power and discipline of the imagination, and deepens your engagement with fundamental questions regarding the self, others and the world.

The skills developed by studying philosophy will serve you well across career fields, including:

  • Law
  • Medicine
  • Medical Ethics
  • Business
  • Clergy
  • Public Policy
  • Publishing
  • Research
  • Nonprofits
  • Management

The study of philosophy is also its own reward. Those who have only a bachelor's degree in philosophy see their salaries grow at a faster rate than do majors from any other discipline. Studying philosophy is also excellent preparation for graduate study, professional school, seminary and any career path in which clear thought and expression are valued. The scores of philosophy majors on the GRE, the LSAT and the GMAT are among the highest of any major.

We also encourage you to pursue internships. Internships are excellent ways to combine your education with practical work experience in industry, business and government. For help with your resume, internship/job placement or general career advice, contact:
