Carvalho leads Baseball Hall of Fame author series
John Carvalho, associate professor of journalism in the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University, will kick-off the Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2017 Author Series on Wednesday, June 14, at 1 p.m., to talk about his new book, Frick: Baseball's Third Commissioner.
The Author Series brings noted baseball authors to Cooperstown for special lectures and book signings during the summer months. The program includes a presentation in the Bullpen Theater, followed by a book signing in the Library Atrium.
Carvalho’s biography of Frick provides a detailed narrative of the career of Commissioner Ford Frick, the man who supposedly put an asterisk next to Roger Maris’ home run record, but never actually did. In actuality, Frick oversaw the game during a time of pivotal change that included the growth of television coverage, continued integration of the game, West Coast expansion, and labor unrest. During his years as commissioner—and his long tenure as National League president—Frick witnessed baseball history from the perspective of a man who had begun his career as a sportswriter.
“Commissioner Frick was key to the establishment of the Hall of Fame Museum, so it certainly seems like a fitting and appropriate choice to begin this year’s series,” Carvalho said.
