Ensembles

The Department of Music at Auburn University sponsors 12 major ensembles open to both music and non-music majors.  Entrance requirements vary with most ensembles requiring an audition.

Large Instrumental Ensembles

Symphonic Band

A large performance group which rehearses and performs the literature of the concert band.

University/Community Orchestra

The Auburn Orchestra performs several times each semester and is open to all university students based on the instrumental needs of the group and successful audition.

Concert Band

A large performance group which rehearses and performs the literature of the concert band.

Campus Band

A large concert band which gives performing experience to all university students with prior band experience. Members of the community may participate by registering through the University Outreach Office.

Jazz Band

Performing group of varying size dedicated to Jazz Band literature.  Students gain experience in the jazz idiom, including improvisational skills.

Marching Band

Provides music for athletic contests and halftime shows at football games, various parades, pep rallies and other campus and off-campus events.

Additional Performing Ensembles

The Dean’s Brass Quintet is a student group that performs regularly on and off campus for a variety of audiences. Dean Aistrup awards each student in the group a scholarship for the school year to participate. The AU Trumpet Ensemble is an audition-based student group that performs trumpet chamber music for groups of varying size. The group meets weekly in the fall and performs one recital during semester. For more information, contact conductor Mark DeGoti: (334) 844-3183, markdegoti@auburn.edu.

The AU Brass Ensemble is a audition-based student group that performs standard brass chamber music. The group meets weekly in the spring and performs one recital during the semester. For more information, contact conductor Mark DeGoti: (334) 844-3183, markdegoti@auburn.edu.

The Horn Ensemble performs standard chamber music for multiple horns (French Horn) including small ensembles (trio and quartet) up to horn choir works. The Trombone Choir and Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble perform challenging literature including original works, arrangements, and transcriptions. These ensembles each rehearse one evening a week for ninety minutes and perform one recital per semester. The Woodwind Quintet’s members are selected by audition. The ensemble meets twice a week and performs regularly on campus and in the community. For audition information, contact Karen Garrison: (334) 844-3180, garrikh@auburn.edu.

The Flute Ensemble meets twice a week. Members of the Flute Ensemble must have previous performing experience as a flute soloist or as a member of a band or orchestra. For more information, contact Karen Garrison: (334) 844-3180, garrikh@auburn.edu.

The Clarinet Ensemble is an elective ensemble open to clarinetists with Instructor and Departmental approval. An audition may be required. Students study and perform clarinet music in various combinations ranging from duos to clarinet choir works. Students rehearse three hours per week and perform one public recital on campus each semester, with additional performing opportunities both on and off campus. The Bassoon Ensemble is designed for Auburn students who play bassoon and have an interest in small ensemble playing, with priority given to Music majors and minors. Interested students must demonstrate basic technical proficiency on the bassoon by playing a two-part audition for the director. Collaborative Piano (Accompanying) offers intensive study to piano majors who have interests in piano-vocal and piano-instrumental repertoire. Through performance classes, individual coachings and departmental performances, students gain familiarity with the standard repertoire and develop the skills needed to be a professional collaborative artist. It is designed for piano majors beginning in the sophomore year. Other students who are advanced pianists who are not music or music education majors may register with prior permission. Piano Ensemble is for piano majors interested in studying and performing 4-hand music. It is typically offered in summer semesters and on request. For more information, contact Laurelie Gheesling: (334) 844-3172, lzg0006@auburn.edu.

Piano Chamber Music Ensemble is for pianists and instrumentalists interested in learning wind and string trios and quartets. Appropriate repertoire is assigned and rehearsed in weekly coachings and student ensemble rehearsals concluding with a performance at the end of the semester. The Indian Music Ensemble (elective credit for music majors) comprises instrumentalists and vocalists performing traditional classical and semi-classical compositions that represent both the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. The ensemble uses authentic instruments such as harmonium, tabla, tanpura and sitar in its performances. The ensemble rehearses 2 hours weekly in the Fall and Spring semesters.
