Brass Audition Requirements

All brass auditions will consist of 12 major scales, a chromatic scale, 2 prepared pieces of contrasting style, and sight-reading. Accompaniment is not required for prepared pieces.

Trumpet

  • 12 major scales. Two octaves up to C when applicable.
  • Chromatic scale - 2 octaves G-G
  • Two contrasting pieces demonstrating both technical facility and musicianship
    • One solo piece or movement from a multi-movement work
    • One etude or solo piece of contrasting style

Recommended Trumpet Solos:

  • Haydn - Concerto in Eb
  • Goedicke - Concert Etude
  • Ropartz - Andante et Allegro

Recommended Trumpet Etude Books:

  • Arban Characteristic Studies
  • Bousquet 36 Celebrated Studies
  • Charlier 36 Transcendental Etudes

Horn

  • 12 major scales two octaves; at least one 3 octaves
  • Chromatic scale - 2 octaves G-G
  • Two contrasting pieces demonstrating both technical facility and musicianship
    • One solo piece or movement from a multi-movement work
    • One etude or solo piece of contrasting style

Suggested Solos:

  • Mozart - 4 Concerti, Concert Rondo
  • F. Strauss - Nocturne or Concerto Op. 8
  • R. Strauss - Concerto No. 1 or 2

Trombone (Tenor and Bass)

  • 12 major scales - two octaves except B, C, Db, D, and Eb which will be one octave
  • Chromatic scale - Low E to High Bb
  • Two contrasting pieces demonstrating both technical facility and musicianship
    • One solo piece or movement from a multi-movement work
    • One etude or solo piece of contrasting style
