Graduate Students

The Department of History at Auburn offers a friendly, informal, yet stimulating environment for graduate studies. History faculty members are publishing scholars as well as award-winning teachers who go out of their way to encourage and assist students in their work. Our graduates have, as a result, been highly successful. Auburn has a strong record of job placement, and students have accepted job offers from an impressive range of academic institutions, archives, and public history organizations.

Our major faculty interests are clustered in the History of the American South and the History of Technology. Faculty members have also gained national and international recognition for their research and publications in American and European history more broadly, including in African American history, the history of civil rights, the history of slavery, the history of the American Civil War, the history of religion, the history of transportation (including aerospace and automobile history), the history of material culture, social and labor history, gender history, urban and spatial histories, and the history of Southeastern Native Americans. We particularly welcome applications to our Ph.D. program from students whose interests match our faculty strengths.

Individuals interested in public history and archival studies, European and non-US histories, as well as secondary school teachers desiring to upgrade their certification, are particularly encouraged to apply to our M.A. program. Students concentrating on Archival Studies or Public History are eligible to receive a Certificate in Archival Studies or Public History in addition to their M.A. in History. These certificate programs are designed to give students a fundamental grounding in those fields and to directly prepare our graduates for employment in archival and public history organizations.
