Bian named chair of history

The College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University is pleased to announce that Dr. Morris L. Bian has been named chair of the Department of History.  

Bian’s appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2014.

Bian, a professor of history, joined the Auburn faculty in 1998. Bian had extensive training in several fields of history and social sciences.  He received his PhD in modern Chinese history from the University of Washington. He is the author of numerous scholarly publications. His book, The Making of the State Enterprise System in Modern China: The Dynamics of Institutional Change (Harvard University Press, 2005), received Choice Magazine’s Outstanding Academic Title Award in 2006 and was named a top-ten social science book in Asian studies published worldwide by the International Convention of Asia Scholars in 2007.  A top Chinese university press published the Chinese edition of his book in 2011.

Bian has received several teaching, assessment, and research awards including the College of Liberal Arts Teaching Excellence Award in 2012, the Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Innovation Faculty Award in 2013, and the Auburn University Creative Research and Scholarship Award in 2009. Bian has served as an assistant chair of the department of history since 2012.  Beyond Auburn, Bian was president of the Historical Society for Twentieth-Century China (2010-2012), the premier international professional organization for modern Chinese studies.
