Closing the Gap project
The “Closing the Gap” project was created in Fall 2008 to help the Hispanic immigrant population integrate into American society through education. The CTG project involves three groups of students: Graduate teaching assistants from the Spanish M.A. program, undergraduate students enrolled in a Spanish course with a service learning component, and immigrants from the local Hispanic population. The objectives of this program are to teach local Hispanic immigrants basic English linguistic skills, American culture and its nuances, and the logistics of a capitalistic society. The program helps teach undergraduate students the value of knowing a second language and exposes them to different Hispanic cultures. Graduate students learn how to prepare and execute lesson plans for an adult population of different cultures.
