Chantel Acevedo is an associate professor in the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and was selected as a 2012 Alumni Professor. Alumni Professors are a group of faculty who receive five-year, non-renewable professorships sponsored by the Auburn Alumni Association with funds endowed from Auburn Annual Giving. These awards are presented on the basis of research, publishing and teaching.
“This award is meaningful to me because it speaks to a sense of home here in Auburn,” Acevedo said. “This award is a kind of verification, for me, that the place where I’ve landed is another kind of home, one where there is a place at the table for me.”
Acevedo’s first novel, Love and Ghost Letters, won the Latino International Book award and she was named a Literary Fellow by the Alabama State Council on the Arts in 2012. She founded the Auburn Writers Conference and edits the Southern Humanities Review.
