Password Protecting Individual Files

Password Protecting Individual Files

If you only have a couple of documents you want to protect, it may be more useful to add a password to the individual files rather than to encrypt the entire device.  You have to remember the password to access the content of this file!

MSOffice 2013 and 2010  for Windows:

Open the file you want to encrypt (it does not matter if it is a Word, Excel, PowerPoint file).

Go to File, Info, Protect Document and select the Encrypt with Password option

Set a password in the box that pops up – read the warning carefully!  You have to remember this password; we will not be able to help you if you forget it.

Enter the password again.  After you have saved and closed this file, the next time you want to open it you will be asked to enter the password.

MSOffice for Mac:

Office 2011

When you go to Save As in an open file, click the Options button – in the Security Tab one of the options is to set a password for opening and/or modifying a file.

Set a password(s) for one or both of the options--Opening a file can have a different password than modifying the file.  Click OK at bottom of window to save the password(s). You have to remember this password; we will not be able to help you if you forget it.

After you have saved and closed this file, the next time you want to open it you will be asked to enter the password.

Office 2016

Open Tools in the menu bar, then Protect Document... to set a password for opening and/or modifying a file. There is also a Protect Document icon in the Review Ribbon.
